Constituency based Elect and Retain Her and #EVAWG campaigns
Oxfam, IPAS Malawi and the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus organised a series of constituency based Elect and Retain Her and #EVAWG campaigns in the district to drum-up support for women leadership and encourage communities to support girls’ education and end violence against women and girls.
The constituency-based Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) campaigns are designed with the aim of promoting movement building for women’s rights through constituency and grassroots based EVAWG and 50:50 Campaigns. This is being done through the interface meetings between Women Parliamentarians and grassroots structures. This activity also supports women’s movement building at grassroots level and we expect the following outcomes:
- Female parliamentarians increased capacity and knowledge in women’s rights.
- Strengthened women’s movement at grassroots level
- Increased awareness of women’s rights at grassroots level especially ending gender-based violence, promoting girl’s education and sexual and reproductive health rights for young people.
- Improve connections between grassroots women’s organizations and duty bearers promoting accountability
Speaking when she presented bicycles to female learners in Mangochi Central Constituency, Minister of Labour, Skills Development and Innovation Hon Martha Lunji encouraged parents to take advantage of Ministry of Education’s Readmission Policy to encourage young mothers to go back to schools.
UK MP, Anne MacClaughlin, encouraged community members to trust women’s leadership because evidence shows that women MPs support pro-poor budgets and policies to improve lives of ordinary citizens.
The constituencies visited included Mangochi Nkungulu represented by Hon Aisha Mambo Adams, Mangochi East, represented by Hon Francesca Masamba and Mangochi Central represented by Hon Victoria Kingstone.
